This symposium will discuss the benefits and limitations of traditional citation-based metrics and emerging alternative metrics (“altmetrics”) in measuring research impact. Citation-based metrics reflect scholarly impact, whereas altmetrics reflect broad public usage. We will highlight what the ACRM journals are doing in this domain. We will also provide preliminary results from a survey of ACRM investigators on documenting their research impact. We will conclude with a question-and-answer session on what individuals can do to better document their impact and how the ACRM as a whole could better demonstrate the impact that its members are having on the medical rehabilitation landscape.
Describe differences between traditional citation-based metrics and newer alternative metrics.
Obtain and document more metrics from their published works.
Articulate next steps in improving the way we document rehabilitation research impact.
