Associate Professor, Director of Research
Department of PM&R, UAB MC,
I have over 20+ years of clinical care and research expertise with scholarly and scientific contributions, and leadership experience in both clinical and research activities and projects. My research experience includes conduct of randomized controlled trials of treatments, such as a visual attention strategy (Lighthouse Strategy) that is now widely used for persons with brain injury or neurodegenerative disorders. I also developed and tested measures to assess moderators of, response to, and recovery from brain injury or other neurodegenerative related visual attention deficits. I am a board-certified Rehabilitation Psychologist and Neuropsychologist, licensed in three states, with over 20 years in the field of rehabilitation of persons who have TBI, SCI, stroke and other injury- or illness-related disabilities. I have received national awards for research and innovative neurobehavioral and cognitive treatments as well as for exploration of precision, accuracy, and sensitivity of measures allowing identification of covariates that moderate or mediate disease effects and rehabilitation outcomes. My research has received state and federal grant support for the past 19 years. I have been principal investigator and project director for funded research projects with the National Institutes of Health (NIH/NICHD), NIDILRR, foundations, and state agencies. I provided grant or project leadership on three, five-year cycles of the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) TBI Model Systems and one SCI Model Systems site. In addition to the above, I have been recognized for my expertise and research contributions through appointed service for review of grant applications (appointed) for NIH, Department of Veteran’s Affairs, NIDILRR, and the Department of Defense. I was an appointed member of the U.S. Secretary of the Veteran’s Administration Advisory Committee on Prosthetics and Special Disabilities Programs. I have led both clinical and research department teams within PM & R Departments and professional organizations for the past 20 years.
