The goal of my research is to investigate the potential of technology to improve physical activity and weight loss interventions. I have conducted both quantitative and qualitative studies on a number of technology-related topics, including pro-anorexia websites, online cancer mailing lists, active video games, and electronic activity monitors. My interventions focus on improving motivation to be physically active, typically using game mechanics and/or narratives. Technologies such as video games and electronic activity monitors allow me to deliver behavior change techniques and game elements in ways that adhere to best practices while allowing for broader future dissemination than is possible with traditional intervention components.
