I have the expertise, training, and motivation necessary to successfully carry out the proposed research project. I am a licensed physical therapist in New York State and Taiwan with three years of clinical experience and nine years of experience in conducting human subject research. My research interest focuses on developing outcome measurements, evaluating shoulder injury biomechanics, and investigating the effects of applying proper assistive technology, such as wheelchairs and exoskeletons. In my previous projects, I designed a successful protocol and applied proper analyses to test and validate a new clinical assessment tool, Transfer Assessment Instrument (TAI), which is developed by our research team based on clinical practice guideline, review of literature, and techniques used in clinics. Through my studies, we successfully tested the TAI’s intra- and inter-rater reliability and minimal detectable change. We also validated the TAI’s surface, concurrent, and construct validity. Then we applied the TAI to quantify the rate of poor transfer skills among Veteran wheelchair users and use the TAI as a transfer training tool to improve wheelchair users’ transfer quality. Through our research team’s work, the TAI has been widely disseminated and has an on-line training version. My previous research experience on developing an outcome measurement could totally apply on this proposed study.
Besides, my background in physical therapy, biomedical engineering, and rehabilitation science also prepares me in conducting translational research for technology into clinical application. I successfully worked with a multidisciplinary team, including different kinds of engineers and clinicians, to build up a biomechanical analysis station, including 10 motion capture cameras, three force plates, two load cells, and some customized tools and programs for simulation and data analysis. I am also certified on using ReWalk, Ekso, and Indego powered exoskeletons. My research results have been published in nine peer-reviewed journal papers and have received seven awards from different conferences.
