AAP Resource Center - Parent & Family Programs

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) produces several pediatric first aid courses. One of these courses is Pediatric First Aid for Caregivers and Teachers (PedFACTs). This course is designed for caregivers, teachers, and others who care for children. The PedFACTs course is designed to give caregivers and teachers the education and confidence that they need to care effectively for sick or injured children.

Program content reflects the 2010 American Heart Association Cardiovascular Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) Guidelines, as well as meeting the standards of Caring for Our Children: National Health and Safety Performance Standards; Guidelines for Early Care and Education Programs, 3rd Edition.

PedFACTs second edition topics include:

• CPR and Choking Relief for infant, child, and adult
• Difficulty breathing
• Instructions and video footage on how to use an AED
• Medication administration, which includes video footage on how to use a nebulizer, an MDI with spacer, and an epinephrine auto- injector
• Common chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma, and sickle cell anemia
• Preparedness

Students and instructors can choose between two different course formats - Onsite or Hybrid.
The four-hour onsite course is comprised of lecture and skills stations, conducted entirely in the classroom. The hybrid course combines self-directed online modules and an exam, followed by hands-on practice in the classroom. The PedFACTs course focuses on what to do if a child in your care suddenly becomes ill or gets injured. After completing the course caregivers, teachers, and others will be better able to:

• Apply the 4Cs of Pediatric First Aid to medical situations
• Recognize an ill or injured child
• Identify specific types of medical problems and give appropriate first aid care
• Know when to call emergency medical services (EMS)
• Know how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
• Understand what an automated external defibrillator (AED) does and how to use one
• Know what to do when a child is choking
• Give rescue medication for a breathing problem
• Use an epinephrine auto-injector for a severe allergic reaction

BLAST! (Babysitter Lessons and Safety Training), Third Edition is an important training program for potential babysitters and parents considering hiring a babysitter. The BLAST! program is designed to be interactive and provides extensive training in pediatric first aid, household safety, and the fundamentals of childcare.
