The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) produces several pediatric emergency medicine and EMS continuing education training programs and products for initial and maintenance of certification needs.
Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP)
Are your students fully prepared to respond, assess, and manage ill or injured children in the field? PEPP represents a complete source of prehospital medical information for the emergency care of infants and children and is designed to teach prehospital professionals how to better assess and manage ill or injured children.
The training curriculum, which is a great resource for initial continuing education or recertification, is a comprehensive, innovative, and highly visual course featuring case-based lectures, live-action video, hands-on skills stations, and small group scenarios, and can be facilitated as a traditional onsite or hybrid course.
The Basic Life Support (BLS) course is geared toward the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and the Advanced Life Support (ALS) course is geared toward the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) and Paramedic.
Following completion of the PEPP course, we recommend continuing your hands-on skills training through our new AAP/Health Scholars virtual reality scenarios on pediatric assessment.
NEW! AAP/Health Scholars Virtual Reality Scenarios
The AAP and Health Scholars have partnered on the development of two new virtual reality scenarios for the prehospital community focused on pediatric assessment. Additional scenarios are being developed for release in 2021 that will focus on seizures, opioid overdose, drowning, and more!
With true-to-life assessment and stabilization scenarios, Pediatric Emergency Assessment™ hones competencies without in-person training or expensive mannikins. Learners are virtually presented with infants and children who present with physical findings of:
• Stability
• Compensated & Decompensated Shock
• Respiratory Distress
• Respiratory Failure
• CNS/Metabolic Disorders
• Cardiopulmonary Failure
They must assess each patient, properly assess the findings, and use voice commands to initiate care.
After refreshing pediatric assessment skills, first responders can practice the role of team lead, managing multiple in-home resuscitation scenarios with Pediatric Emergency Care™. You’ll evaluate infants and children to identify underlying conditions, then intervene with pediatric resuscitation workflows — all in accordance with American Heart Association and Red Cross guidelines.
Learners train virtually on pediatric length tapes, dosing medications and electricity, team-based management skills, and full cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
APLS
APLS: The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Resource course provides a comprehensive review curriculum of pediatric emergency medicine for all health care professionals who provide emergency or urgent care to pediatric patients. The content within the APLS framework is truly its primary strength. APLS offers pediatricians, emergency physicians, physician assistants, advance practitioners, and nurses, the advanced knowledge and skills necessary to assess and manage critically ill or injured children during the first hours in the emergency department.
In addition to being a training course, APLS can augment your pediatric emergency medicine education as it covers a broad range of pediatric conditions and is case-based, which makes for more interesting, real-life learning. Many of the topics covered are among the requirements for residency education in pediatrics:
Acute episodic medical illnesses such as meningitis, sepsis, dehydration, pneumonia, diarrhea, renal failure, seizure, coma, hypotension, hypertension, and respiratory illness. Problems associated with chronic disease such as diabetic ketoacidosis, status asthmaticus, status epilepticus, congenital heart disease, cystic fibrosis, gastrointestinal, metabolic and neurologic disorders.
Over 90 step-by-step procedures such as endotracheal intubation, placement of I/O and IV lines, umbilical artery and vein catheter placement, thoracic procedures, conscious sedation and pain management, surgical airway techniques, wound care, suturing, splinting, and casting.
