Veterinary Research and Consulting Services
Dr. Smith received BS and MS degrees in animal science at Kansas State University and was commissioned as an Army Air Defense Artillery officer through the K-State Army ROTC program. He served two years on active duty, then 23 years as an active Army Reservist, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Following graduation from veterinary school, he completed a large animal medicine and surgery internship at Oklahoma State University and later worked as a field services clinician for 15 years at Oklahoma State. He then worked as a feedlot veterinarian for nearly two years with Palo Duro Veterinary Services in Canyon, Texas, returning to Oklahoma State for 10 years as the McCasland Chair in Beef Health and Production. He is board certified as a diplomate by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Food Animal). Dr. Smith has worked with Veterinary Research and Consulting Services for 19 years, with primary practice emphasis on feedlot and stocker medicine and management. His clients have a one-time capacity ranging from 3,000 to 105,000 head. He has served as the president of the AABP, the AVC, and the Western Veterinary Conference and has chaired the NCBA Cattle Health and Well-being Committee as well as being a member of the NCBA BQA Advisory Group for over 20 years. He currently serves as the editor of The Bovine Practitioner, the AABP Conference Proceedings, and consulting editor for Veterinary Clinics of North America Food Animal Practice. Dr. Smith has authored numerous publications, and has been a speaker across North America and Europe. He has been honored several times for his leadership in veterinary medicine, and in 2013 was honored as the Oklahoma Producer of the Year by the Oklahoma Beef Council 23 years of leadership in BQA and for the incorporation of BQA programs into his stocker cattle operation.
