Digestive death loss or feed lot “bloat” can be mis-leading challenges in feedyard production systems . Higher than expected digestive death loss can be a symptom of fundamental problems within production practices that need to be changed. This is why it is imperative that identification, understanding and diagnosis of digestive related death loss be as accurate as possible when brought forth by the veterinarian of record.
Differentiating digestive loss can be relatively straight forward if the approach is consistent and evidence based. The death loss subsequent to nutritional problems can be the tip of the ice berg. If left unaddressed over time there can be an increase in the incidence of other illnesses such as BRD, laminitis, and peritonitis to name a few.
