Neurological conditions associated with cerebellar disease in newborn calves can result from viral/bacterial infections, toxic plants ingested by the dam during gestation, or potentially a genetic component. Bovine Familial Convulsions and Ataxia Syndrome is a condition associated with cerebellar abiotrophy. This condition is believed to be genetic, but currently no genetic markers have been identified to allow for selection against this condition. This case study describes attempts to reproduce the condition in two groups of cattle in hopes of identifying a genetic marker.
