WVC 91st Annual Conference
In this session we will discuss the chain of events that lead to a weak or acidotic calf and the modified APGAR scoring systems that have been proposed throughout the years to help promptly identify those considered high risk. We will evaluate the APGAR score’s ability to accurately and consistently identify acidotic calves and review clinical indicators that are highly associated with acidemia and other abnormal blood parameters. This session will leave you questioning why we are so quick to adopt index-based scoring systems and how we can utilize a more outcome-based approach. The following session, “Assessment and impacts of newborn beef calf vigor” is designed to address some of these lingering questions.
