Rabbits, chinchillas, and guinea pigs are hind-gut fermenters with a functional cecum. They rely on gut microbes to break down fiber and convert it to usable energy. In turn, these microbes rely on the host for a steady supply of water and nutrients for their survival. Any disturbance in this mutually beneficial relationship often results in gastrointestinal hypomotility known as "GI Stasis".
