WVC 91st Annual Conference
This course is designed to teach participants the technical aspects of a variety of soft tissue surgery procedures. Some ‘theory’ will be included in the lectures, but emphasis will be placed on ‘how’ to perform each procedure. This will maximize the time participants spend in the laboratory. Topics have been chosen that represent surgical conditions frequently seen in veterinary practice and include lateral ear resection, total ear canal ablation and lateral bulla osteotomy, three methods of chest drain placement, esophagostomy tube placement, vulvarplasty for treatment of perivulvar dermatitis, and perineal hernia repair using the internal obturatory transposition. Emphasis will be placed on the regional anatomy as well as the technical aspects used to perform each procedure. Videos of clinical case material will be used extensively throughout the lectures to help illustrate each technique before practising them in the laboratory. This course is designed for veterinary surgeons interested in providing a higher level of surgical treatment for a variety of practical soft tissue surgery techniques in their practice.
Procedures taught: Lateral Ear Resection – This procedure will demonstrate how to remove the lateral aspect of the vertical ear canal cartilage thus exposing the horizontal canal for efficient drainage as well as easy access for medical treatment.
Total Ear Canal Ablation & Lateral Bulla Osteotomy – This procedure demonstrates removal of the lateral and horizontal ear canal cartilages as well as how to open the lateral aspect of the bulla for curettage.
Chest Drain Placement – Three techniques will be used to perform urgent chest drain placement.
E-tube placement – Several techniques for placement of an esophagostomy feeding tube will be performed.
Vulvarplasty – This ‘plastic surgery’ technique is used to resolve vulvar conformational defects and thus relieve vulvar fold dermatitis.
Perineal Hernia Repair – This procedure will focus on the internal obturator transposition technique for repair of perineal hernia.
