WVC 91st Annual Conference
This course is designed to teach participants the technical aspects of a variety of soft tissue surgery procedures. Some ‘theory’ will be included in the lectures, but emphasis will be placed on ‘how’ to perform each procedure. This will maximize the time participants spend in the laboratory. Topics have been chosen that represent surgical conditions commonly seen in veterinary practice and include salivary gland resection, laryngeal tie-back, scrotal urethrostomy, how to perform a 15-minute gastropexy, cholecystectomy, rapid splenectomy using 4 ligatures and a novel technique for anal sacculectomy. Emphasis will be placed on the regional anatomy as well as the technical aspects used to perform each procedure. Videos of clinical case material will be used extensively throughout the lectures to help illustrate each technique before practicing them in the laboratory. This course is designed for veterinary surgeons interested in providing a higher level of surgical treatment for a variety of practical soft tissue surgery techniques in their practice.
Surgical Procedures taught: Salivary Mucocele – This technique will ensure complete removal of the mandibular and sublingual salivary glands thus eliminating mucocele recurrence.
Laryngeal Tie-back – This procedure will describe the proper placement of a suture that will abduct the arytenoid cartilage thus allowing better airflow through the upper airway.
Scrotal Urethrostomy – This procedure will demonstrate how to get the largest permanent urethrostomy opening with the least amount of postoperative hemorrhage.
Anal Sacculectomy – This novel technique allows easy identification of the anal sac thus ensuring its complete removal with minimal injury to the anal sphincter muscle and protection of the caudal rectal nerve.
4 Ligature Splenectomy – Participants will study the vascular anatomy of the spleen in order to be able to perform a ‘rapid splenectomy’.
Cholecystectomy– Participants will learn the regional anatomy and relationship of the gallbladder with is associated liver lobes. Careful dissection of the gallbladder from its attachments to the liver lobes and identification and secure ligation of the cystic duct for complete removal of the gallbladder.
10 Minute Gastropexy – An incisional gastropexy can be performed in 10-15 minutes once the important regional anatomy is understood and quickly identified.
Capacity 24. Price: $600.
