Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID), or equine Cushing’s Disease, is being recognized with increasing frequency. It develops as a consequence of loss of hypothalamic dopaminergic neurons, with parallels to Parkinson’s Disease. Diagnosis of PPID in advanced cases is straightforward but diagnosis in earlier stages of the disease remains challenging. This talk will provide an overview of the syndrome and outline a practical approach to diagnosis of PPID and an approach to deciding whether or not medical treatment is warranted.
