(EQ19) Practical Fluid Therapy & Blood Transfusion in the Horse

This presentation will discuss the choices for fluid therapy and distribution of the fluid once it is administered which will enable us to use them more effectively. Both intravenous administration and how to use enteral fluids will be described. Additionally an update on the use of colloids will be given, including the latest update on concerns over the use of Hetastarch. A how to guide to performing a blood transfusion in the field will also be given.

Vanessa Cook

Dr Vanessa Cook, VetMB, MS, PhD, DACVS, DACVECC. Dr Cook went to vet school at Cambridge University, England. She did a residency in equine surgery at the Ohio State University and a fellowship in large animal emergency and critical care at Cornell. Her interest in colic led to a PhD in gastrointestinal physiology at North Carolina State University. She then worked as an Associate Professor in large animal emergency and critical care at Michigan State University. She is board certified by ACVS and ACVECC. In her spare time she competes in triathlons and represents the USA at the World Championships.
