Placing Early Childhood Development on the Global Agenda: The Role of Pediatricians within a Multidisciplinary Context
A growing and compelling body of evidence demonstrates that children born into poverty, whether in high-, middle- or low-income countries, are at heightened risk for compromised health and development throughout the life course. Consequently, there is increasing recognition of the need to expand initiatives to address not only child mortality, but also child morbidity and adverse exposures to improve health and developmental outcomes. Early childhood development (ECD) recently was prioritized by the World Health Organization and other agencies to optimize health, equity, and sustainable development globally. However, research is needed on the extent to which interventions can be applied to diverse populations as well as on optimal approaches for scaling up these interventions, particularly in low-resource settings. This session will describe the importance of ECD and the global agenda to address ECD, including the vital role of pediatricians who within multidisciplinary teams can advance ECD assessment, research, and program implementation.
