This session will review common signs and symptoms of an ankle sprain as well as key history, mechanism of injury or physical examination findings that indicate other less common, often more serious ankle injuries that must be identified to avoid delays in diagnosis and complications from injury. Faculty will identify common reasons why acute ankle injuries fail to improve and provide tips so that the pediatrician knows when to seek specialty care from sports medicine or orthopedic surgical colleagues, the urgency of such referrals, and who best to receive those referrals. A practical algorithm for identifying criteria for safe return to sport and physical activity will be presented and discussed.
