During this session, faculty will highlight selected new medications approved for use in children as well as older medications with new clinical uses or labeling applicable to children resulting from additional studies and/or postmarketing surveillance. Faculty will introduce pediatricians to some concepts of precision medicine, an emerging approach to disease treatment that takes into account an individual’s genome, environment, and lifestyle. Precision medicine holds the promise of every child getting the treatment that is exactly right for him or her. The impact of genetic makeup, genetic ontogeny, proteomics, and metabolomics will be discussed in the context of pediatric development. The racial differences in drug response for asthma will be explored in the same context.
