A new bill to ban water beads was just introduced in the U.S. Senate. The bipartisan bill proposes a ban on the sale of water beads designed or marketed as children’s toys, sensory toys or educational/art materials. Water beads are easily mistaken for candy by children and, once ingested, can not only be choking hazards but can expand up to 1,500 times their original size, causing severe injury and even death. AAP is advocating for their ban and supports this bill and similar legislation already introduced in the House. https://nbcnews.to/3JUupfx

“What a privilege it is to be a pediatrician…often, I feel I have made a positive difference in the lives of children living in poverty. Frequently, I feel I’m helping them on their pathway to success. Once in a great while, I have actually saved a child’s life with my own hands or stayed with them when they needed someone to care about them or comforted them in times near the end of their lives or mourned for them with their families. Those times are burned in my memory and my soul.” AAP past president Dr. Bernard P. Dreyer accepted the Joseph W. St. Geme, Jr. Leadership Award at the 2024 Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) meeting earlier this month. The prestigious award honors leaders and changemakers in pediatrics. As federal officials take steps to reclassify marijuana as a lower-risk drug, AAP leaders say they welcome the opportunity to weigh in to ensure the health of children and adolescents is taken into account. “Pediatricians understand that marijuana use is harmful to children’s development. If the White House were to issue this proposed rule, AAP would welcome the chance to comment with our recommendations, focusing on how to best protect child health and safety, ” AAP President Dr. Ben Hoffman said.
